Minardi-Ford

Breathing a hefty sigh of relief to be rid of the heavy, slow Motori Moderni engines that had been such a liability for the last couple of years, Giancarlo Minardi’s team switched to Ford power for 1988, the proven, reliable DFZ mounted in a new M188 chassis. With the talented Sandro Nannini on his way to Benetton, Adrián Campos was joined by Luis Perez Sala to make up the first all-Spanish driver lineup in the sport’s history.

Campos had not particularly impressed in 1987, looking anywhere from unsure of himself to completely out of his depth – but the car hadn’t exactly allowed him to show his best and perhaps with a year’s experience under his belt he would make a better fist of things in 1988.

Barcelona-born Sala had come up through the junior formulae rapidly  and by 1985 was based in Italy contesting the Formula 3 championship.  A move up to Formula 3000 followed, where he won two races in his debut year and came runner-up to Stefano Modena in the overall standings in 1987. He followed Modena into Formula 1 with Minardi, and looked like he might be a promising talent for the future.
